Spencer has had a well-rounded upbringing in swimming. Spencer started swimming Summer League at four years old and then began swimming for a USA club team when he turned twelve years old. He swam through high school and briefly at West Valley Community College before injury and illness prompted his departure from high level competition.
During his time competing he was a part of the 13-14 year old all-star team at the Pacific, SoCal, Sierra Nevada, and Oregon LSC’s Quad meet. He also competed in the Western Zone all-star meet at ages fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen. When Spencer was fourteen he won the 200 yard backstroke at Far Westerns and the one hundred meter backstroke at Summer Long Course Far Westerns. In High School Swimming he was a six time finalist in the one hundred back and one hundred butterfly. Spencer earned All-American honors four times and All American consideration twice.
Since becoming a coach, Spencer has worked three summers coaching Summer League in the Almaden neighborhood in San Jose at Shadow Brooke Cabana Club, one season teaching at West Coast Aquatics, one year working as a part time volunteer at TEMPO Aquatics, and the 2007-2008 Olympic year assisting the Head Coach at Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics. Spencer’s experience brings a wide variety of very current technique in stroke mechanics as well as some of the newest and fastest styles of training provided in USA Swimming. Coach Spencer is very excited to be a part of the Makos and is looking forward to a long productive future on the team.
